7-year-old struck, killed by SUV as she tried to cross Arlington street, police say

An Arlington child who was attempting to cross a street near her home was hit and killed by a sports utility vehicle Tuesday night, Arlington police said Wednesday.

The SUV hit and ran over the 7-year-old girl, authorities said.

She was rushed to a Fort Worth hospital where she died from her injuries, Arlington police said.

The girl has been identified as Tamara Mendoza of Arlington, according to officials with the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office. A ruling on her death is pending an autopsy.

The accident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of Blue Sky Drive in Arlington.

The SUV was traveling southbound on Blue Sky Drive when the girl tried to cross the street and was hit, Arlington police said.

The SUV driver, a man in his 60s, stopped immediately after the accident, authorities said.

Arlington police said there were no immediate signs of impairment on the driver and no evidence that he was speeding.

After being interviewed, the driver was released from the scene.

The case remains under investigation on Wednesday.
