Pregnant woman, unborn child and driver die after Arlington wrong-way crash

A man driving the wrong way Thursday night on an Arlington road caused a collision of four vehicles in which he and a pregnant woman were killed, police said.

Tristan Bustillos, 27, of Arlington, was driving a Ford Taurus south in northbound lanes in the moments before the wreck occurred in the 4300 block of Matlock Road, authorities said.

The Taurus hit a northbound sport utility vehicle about 7:15 p.m., and two other vehicles became involved in the collision, police said, citing witness accounts and surveillance images from a business.

A woman who was pregnant was in the Infiniti QX50 that was struck by Bustillos’ car, police said. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office had not released her name Friday.

The woman’s mother also was in the SUV. She suffered serious injuries and was improving Friday at a hospital, police said.

Police had not determined Friday why the Taurus veered into oncoming traffic. The investigation of the case was incomplete.

“We are awaiting toxicology reports and have not ruled out speed as a possible factor. We do not know if there was a medical emergency, distraction, impairment or other reason why the driver crossed over,” Lt. Christopher Cook said.

Bustillos, a youth soccer club coach who lived in Arlington, died at the scene, police said.

Bustillos was on his way home from a BVB International Academy practice, the organizer of a gofundme.com fundraiser for his family wrote. He was married and the father of one child.

The male drivers of the other two vehicles, a Toyota Yaris and Nissan Altima, suffered minor injuries and were treated on the scene, police said.

A photo from Star-Telegram media partner WFAA-TV showed two cars with their front ends heavily damaged, and one of the cars was missing its doors.

Northbound lanes of Matlock Road from Stephens Street to Interstate 20 were closed for several hours during the police investigation.
