COVID hospitalizations in Tarrant County lowest in more than a month; 14 deaths added
Tarrant County reported 14 COVID-19 deaths and 1,902 new cases on Thursday.
The latest COVID-related deaths include a Forest Hill man in his 50s, a Fort Worth man in his 60s, a White Settlement man in his 60s, an Arlington woman in her 60s, a Grand Prairie man in his 70s, a man and woman from rural Tarrant County in their 70s, a North Richland Hills man in his 70s, two Fort Worth men and a woman in their 70s, a Fort Worth man and woman in their 80s, and a Fort Worth man older than 90.
All 14 had underlying health conditions, according to officials.
Tarrant County has reported 548,922 COVID-19 cases, including 5,410 deaths and an estimated 467,811 recoveries.
Note to readers: Tarrant County does not release data on the vaccination status of recently diagnosed patients or deaths. Officials have released this type of data once in June and it showed that nearly 100% of the new cases reported at the time (from May to mid-June) were in people who were not vaccinated. Further, county officials said fewer than 200 of those new cases at the time were in previously vaccinated Tarrant residents.
COVID-19 hospitalizations
Hospitalized COVID patients decreased by 86 to 718 in the latest seven-day moving average. It’s the fewest since Jan. 4. The pandemic high was 1,528 on Jan. 6, 2021.
COVID-19 hospitalizations decreased to 16% from 18% of the total number of beds in Tarrant County and make up 18% of the 4,028 occupied beds. The rate was at a pandemic-high 38% on Jan. 10.
Confirmed COVID patients decreased to 15.89% from 16.40% of all available hospital beds in the North Central Texas Trauma Region, which includes 45 counties (divided into three regions). It’s the lowest rate since Jan. 4.
Hospital beds
Tarrant County’s hospital bed occupancy remained at 91%, according to county data. Available hospital beds decreased by six to 407. The pandemic low of 357 was reported Jan. 10.
ICU beds
Adult ICU bed occupancy decreased to 94% from 96%. The rate was last at a pandemic-high 99% on Oct. 7. Ventilator use remained at 297. Patients are using 39% of the 758 ventilators in the county.
Positivity rate
The COVID-19 positive test rate for Tarrant County decreased to 19.08% from 22.40% in the latest available seven-day-average data. The rate has been declining since Jan. 16. It’s the lowest seven-day average since Dec. 23.
Vaccination data
Children ages 5 and older are now eligible for vaccination, so the following vaccination percentages have been altered by the Texas Department of State Health Services to reflect that larger population.
According to Texas DSHS, 68.07% of Tarrant County residents 5 or older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 59.62% of residents 5 or older have been fully vaccinated.
DSHS also reports that 92.39% of Tarrant residents 65 or older have received at least one dose, and 84.69% of residents 65 or older have been fully vaccinated.
More than 74.71% of Texas residents 5 or older have received at least one dose, according to DSHS. The rate of fully vaccinated Texas residents 5 or older is at 63.22%.
Tarrant County is offering free COVID-19 vaccines and testing at locations throughout the area.
