Young patients contribute to spike as Dallas County reports 1,174 new COVID-19 cases

Dallas County reported Sunday two more deaths and 1,174 new cases of COVID-19, bringing the county’s totals to 451 deaths and 33,800 total confirmed cases.

The two people who died were men, one in his 60s and one in his 80s. Both had underlying health conditions and had been critically ill in area hospitals, according to a news release from County Judge Clay Jenkins.

The man in his 80s was a resident of a long-term care facility, the release said.

About a third of all deaths in Dallas County have been associated with long-term care facilities, according to the release.

Half of all cases reported since June 1 in Dallas County have been among patients ages 18 to 39. Jenkins wrote in the release that many confirmed cases since June 1 have been associated with large social gatherings.
