Dallas County’s COVID surge continues with massive slew of new cases, hospitalizations
Dallas County reported 394 new coronavirus cases on Friday, the second-most single-day total of the pandemic.
Dallas County has confirmed 16,042 COVID-19 cases and 311 deaths, including four new deaths on Friday.
The latest deaths included a Grand Prairie man in his 30s, a Dallas man in his 50s who had no underlying health conditions, a Farmer’s Branch man in his 60s who was a resident of a long-term care facility, and a Dallas man in his 70s.
Friday’s 394 cases are second only to the 413 cases reported on Wednesday for most in the county during the pandemic. The county has reported 300 or more cases for 10 consecutive days and at least 200 every day since May 28.
Hospitalizations for COVID-19 patients continued to rise in the county, including 454 on Friday, a pandemic-high for the county.
The county has averaged 351 COVID-19 cases a day this week, up 59 cases a day from last week and up 100 from two weeks ago.
Earlier Friday, Dallas County Commissioners passed an order requiring businesses to enforce employees and patrons to wear face coverings. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins hopes the order will help slow the recent surge in new cases.
“Think of hospitalizations as the apex, the top of the iceberg,” Jenkins told KXAS/Ch. 5. “There are a lot more people now out in our community that could get you sick. That’s why we’re moving into a more aggressive stance to protect you from COVID.”
