Tarrant coronavirus cases continue surge as county passes 7,000 cases, nears 200 deaths

Tarrant County reported 296 new coronavirus cases on Friday, another massive surge for the second consecutive day. But county health officials said that 197 of those cases are from a backlog due to a lab reporting issue.

Tarrant County has confirmed a total of 7,120 COVID-19 cases, including 191 deaths and at least 3,053 recoveries. The latest death was a Fort Worth man in his 70s who had underlying health conditions. Fort Worth residents have made up 115 of the pandemic-related deaths in the county.

Friday’s new case count is the second-highest of the pandemic. The highest was 481 on May 9 when a surge in infections was reported at Fort Worth’s Federal Medical Center prison. Health officials have said this week that the recent increase in newly-reported cases is, in part, because of a “backlog due to a lab reporting issue.”

Coronavirus case counts have increased every day this week. The county has averaged 213 cases the past five days. That’s up by about 90 cases per day from the previous five days (June 4-7).
