Judge says he has first case of coronavirus in Parker County; local disaster declared
A Springtown justice of the peace is the first confirmed coronavirus case in Parker County, according to health officials.
Precinct 1 Judge Kelvin Miles issued a statement Monday on Facebook announcing he tested positive after becoming ill on March 14.
“The flu test came back negative and I had to wait until [Sunday] to get the results back for the coronavirus. And I do have it,” Miles said. “I have not left my house except the trip to the doctor last Monday. I don’t want to start a panic. I’m almost 63 and I’m going to survive this.”
Miles said he hasn’t had contact with anyone except his wife.
“I couldn’t report this because I didn’t know what I had until [Sunday] evening,” he said. “This is not fun but we will survive this. If you have the symptoms go get checked out. And please stay home and not spread this. I have not been anywhere else to be infected.”
Miles spoke by phone to the Weatherford Democrat and urged people to stay home if they have symptoms. He says he’s feeling better after being “pretty ill” the first five or six days.
“If you think you might have it don’t be running around giving it to everybody,” he said. “I’ve been home for I guess 10 or 11 days now without leaving the house and the doctor has advised me to stay [home] for another two weeks, which I am. The main thing is I don’t want to spread this and have some elderly person die from it. People who already have health problems are the ones that are going to be most affected by it.”
Parker County commissioners unanimously approved a 30-day declaration of local disaster order in an effort to combat the spread of COVID-19 on Monday.
“I continue to get an immense amount of comments from people pushing for a shelter in place [order], some action from the county,” Parker County Judge Pat Deen said at Monday’s commissioners meeting. “People are in desperate need of information, demanding their local government take action and the circumstances have changed.”
