Grand Prairie closing facilities to public after shutting gyms, bars and massage parlors

Grand Prairie will begin restricting public access to all city facilities on Monday because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

City staff will remain conducting business, including police, fire, EMS, public works and other essential services. Each have “protocols in place to protect first responders so they can continue to serve residents,” the city said in a release. The city urges residents to use online services where available at gptx.org, and includes contact information for all offices. The main number for city hall is 972-237-8000.

“These decisions were not made lightly,” Mayor Ron Jensen said in a release. “City officials have been working diligently and have had to make difficult decisions to help mitigate the spread of this virus. We realize the disruption to your business and personal lives will be extremely impactful, as it is to our community. However, if left unchecked, the virus would quickly overtake our healthcare system, creating chaos and no chance of survival for many.”

Grand Prairie passed an ordinance on Thursday to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, which includes:

• Limiting gatherings to no more than 10.

• Only allows take out, drive through, delivery or curbside at restaurants.

• Closes bars, gyms, entertainment venues, event centers, theaters, massage parlors and more.

• Limits retail, convenience stores, places of worship and mall to 50% occupancy or 125, whichever is less.
