Dallas County reports first coronavirus death, adds 20 new confirmed cases

A Richardson man in his 60s is the first confirmed coronavirus-related death in Dallas County, officials have announced.

The man was found dead in his home and did not have high-risk chronic medical conditions, according to the medical examiner’s office. He’s one of 20 new cases of the COVID-19 virus in the county. Dallas County now has 55 confirmed cases, not including four cases of people who live outside of the county.

There have been four confirmed deaths in Texas related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Of the 20 new cases, 16 are self-isolating at home. Three were hospitalized, including one in critical condition.

Among the new cases, 12 live in Dallas, three live in Garland and two live in Mesquite. One each lives in Farmers Branch and Cedar Hill. Five of the new cases are related to out-of-state travel and two of the cases are related to international travel. Three of the new cases are related to a previously confirmed COVID-19 case.

The ages among the news cases range between the 30s and 90s, including six men and two women in their 30s, two men and two women in their 50s, two men and three women in their 60s, one women in her 70s and one woman in her 90s.

Six of the cases are thought to have been the product of community transmission while four other new cases are still being investigated.

Dallas Police confirmed an officer has tested positive, according to KRLD/1080 AM. It is unclear if the police officer is among the 20 new cases in Dallas County. The officer worked in the Northeast Patrol Division and is doing well and in a self-quarantine, the DPD said.
