If we fight coronavirus together, McConaughey says, we’ll be alright, alright, alright
Matthew McConaughey has made us feel all sorts of emotions in his films.
Now he’s filling us with civic pride.
The Austin-based Oscar-winning actor posted a video on social media this week urging us all to take care of ourselves and each other during the coronavirus pandemic.
McConaughey thinks the crisis has the potential to bring us together as a society.
“When we get out of this, this virus, this time might be the one time that brings us all together and unifies us like we have not been in a long time,” McConaughey said. “So, yes, let’s see if we can make some lemonade out of this lemon that we’re in the middle of.”
McConaughey also provided the narration for a 30-second public service announcement released by Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
He also urged people from running scared and reacting out of fear.
“Let’s take care of ourselves and each other. Let’s not go to the lowest common denominator and get paranoid,” he said in the 1 minute, 29 second video. “Let’s do our due diligence, take the precautions that we need to to take care of ourselves and those of us around us.”
Lastly, like a coach talking to his team before the big game, McConaughey rallies us to rise up to defeat the virus. After all, he’s not the University of Texas’ “Minister of Culture” for no reason.
“Right now, more than ever before, we’re all more dependent on each other than we ever have been,” he said. “We have an enemy in coronavirus that is faceless, raceless, sexless, non-denominational and bipartisan and it’s an enemy we all agree we want to beat. We want to beat and we’re going to beat.”
