One of the last large retailers at Ridgmar Mall will permanently close
The JCPenney location at the Ridgmar Mall will close later this year, JCPenney Media Relations confirmed in an email to the Star-Telegram Thursday, July 16.
A Facebook post from a JCPenney employee on Tuesday began chatter that the store was closing.
JCPenney is one of the last anchor stores in Ridgmar Mall. Macy’s closed in 2016 as a part of a grander 40-store nationwide shutter. Then, Sears and Neiman Marcus both closed their Ridgamar stores in 2017. Dillard’s remains as the last large store that opened with the mall in 1976. Cinemark Movie Theatre also remains since its opening in 2003.
Previous Star-Telegram reporting revealed FAA filings for height reviews for eight, 70-foot tall buildings at the Ridgmar Mall. The plans have not yet been approved and if they were to be, there would be several more grant approvals with Fort Worth City Council. This filing was just the first whisper of redevelopment at the mall in years.
In 2020, Plano-based JCPenney filed for bankruptcy and shuttered more than 240 stores nationwide. Then in 2025, they merged with Forever 21 parent brand SPARC Group, who owned and operated brands like Aéropostale, Brooks Brothers, Eddie Bauer, Lucky Brand and Nautica. Shortly after, eight JCPenney stores closed.
The employee’s Facebook post announced details of a close-out sale and closing date. Here is what to know about the final days for JCPenney in Ridgmar Mall.
