Haltom City company recalls 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausages
The Hillshire Brands Company in Haltom City has recalled 58 million pounds of corn dogs and sausages on a stick. The items were sold online and shipped to stores nationally.
The packages are labelled State Fair Corn Dogs, and Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick.
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement the products may be contaminated with pieces of wood that got into the batter.
At least five people were injured after consuming the products and there have been multiple complaints as of Sept. 27, when the USDA released the recall information.
“The Hillshire Brands Company conducted an investigation and determined that the wooden sticks entered the production process prior to product battering,” the Food Safety and Inspection Service said in a statement.
There is still a concern that these products might remain in consumers’ refrigerators and freezers and those of schools and other institutions, and the USDA urges people to check if they have these products and throw them away.
The products were packaged between March 17 and Sept. 25. Here is a list of products and pictures of the labels.
The corn dogs and sausages on a stick were also sold to U.S. Department of Defense facilities and commercially to school districts, but were not a part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture‘s National School Lunch Program.
Federal officials said there have been no additional reports of injury, and anyone concerned about an injury should contact their healthcare provider.
The USDA said consumers with questions about the recall can contact Hillshire Brands Company Customer Care at 888-747-7611.
Hillshire Brands Company did not immediately respond to the Star-Telegram’s request for comment.
