Dining Q&A: What’s new at Westfest? And where did The Original restaurant murals go?

Westfest offers polka, sausage, kolaches, beer

Hey, Bud! Is Westfest still a big thing?

—Idle comment by idle reader

What could be bigger than a three-day kolache-sausage-beer-and-polka festival?

It’s an hour’s drive south of Fort Worth, offering homemade kolaches and klobasnik Sept. 1-3, along with polka and country bands.

Go early. It opens at 11:30 a.m. both weekend days.

Also, the popular Czech-American Restaurant, 220 N. Main St., is serving lunch and dinner Friday and lunch Saturday, including Prasek’s sausage with Czech fries.

Residents of West will hold their annual festival, Westfest, this weekend. It gives residents a chance to take a break from the aftermath of the April 17 explosion and have a celebration. Preparations for the festival are underway on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. (Star-Telegram/Joyce Marshall)

Murals from The Original have not reappeared

Hey, Bud! What happened to The Original’s murals?

—Facebook reader at facebook.com/diningguy

The 1931 artworks by Texas muralist Pattie Richardson East are said to be in storage. A recent photo posted on Facebook shows an earlier East mural still on the east wall at the Original’s old location, 4713 Camp Bowie Blvd. The restaurant is now at 1400 N. Main St.

Nothing changing at Mercado Juarez. Good.

Hey, Bud! What’s new at Mercado Juarez Cafe?

Not a darn thing yet. Mercado Juarez, 1651 E. Northside Drive and also at 125 East Interstate 20 in Arlington, is still serving the same Tex-Mex, the same chips and the same reliable lunches as always under the new ownership group led by local restaurateur Marcus Paslay.

The Fort Worth location is busy at lunch and weekends, so there’s no reason for Pasley or manager Russell Kirkpatrick to change anything besides a few new beers or tequilas.

To beat the crowd, go at weeknight dinner or weekend lunch.
