What’s new in Fort Worth? Coffee, sandwiches, soups — and a fresh artisan bread bakery

The sports bar is gone.

A fresh artisan-bread bakery-cafe, food market, tea room and cooking school replaced it.

Sounds like an upgrade to me. And 3rd Street Market is definitely an upgrade, not only for the corner of Lamar and West Third streets but also for all downtown Fort Worth.

Sourdough bread baron Trent Shaskan, a favorite at farmers’ markets for his Icon Bread, is the baker behind it all. He has help from former Cafe Modern chef Dena Peterson Shaskan and partners from Mockingbird Food and Dixya Bhattarai’s Indulge cooking school.

It’s a daily lunch cafe and boutique market, featuring sandwiches on sourdough from an oven in the middle of the dining room, soups, wines, coffees, juices and afternoon tea.

The selections are limited for now. The other day, sandwiches included turkey giardiniere, chicken salad or tomato-and-mozzarella. The single salad was a chopped Italian.

But patrons were coming just to idle at the bar and nosh on French onion soup and fresh sourdough with red plum jam, plus coffee or wine.

One big plus about 3rd Street Market: Parking is easy.

The Lamar Street location — technically, 425 W. Third St. — is on the western edge of Sundance Square.

It faces the current downtown library, meaning there’s street parking all around. (On weekends, street parking is free.)

Opening week “has been a whirlwind,” Dena Peterson Shaskan said.

The market sold about 800 sandwiches, plus plants, flowers and produce, she said.

It’s also a gift market and cooking school, with a table set for afternoon tea.
