Self-taught baker opens her first brick-and-mortar on South Main

After years of popping up around Fort Worth, Gretchen Seegel recently opened her very first scone bakery, Sunrise Scones.

Seegel grew up in a family of self-taught bakers. She would visit her grandmother in Maine every summer and cherishes her fresh apple pies and chewy molasses cookies. She loved trying out new bakeries, but could never find a scone to satisfy her craving — until she created her own “perfect scone recipe.” It uses heavy cream and sweet cream butter to create a treat that is crisp on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside.

Seegel started by selling her treats at the former The Table market before securing a permanent spot at the Clearfork Farmers Market. People would ask her where they could buy her scones during the week. She would drive around the city and wonder where she could make that happen.

When friends told her about a perfectly-sized space at 309 W. Daggett Ave. in South Main Village, she signed the lease.

Sunrise Scones opened on June 19. Customers lined up to try peach cobbler, lemon lavender, everything spinach and feta scones.

Sunrise Scones menu

Seegel’s bakery menu rotates depending on seasonal flavors. Each week, a new menu will drop, but three staple flavors will stay — blueberry lemon, everything seasoning with spinach and feta and cinnamon sugar.

Currently, she is serving peach cobbler, lemon lavender, gluten-free strawberries and cream, blueberry lemon, apricot vanilla, mini vanilla cream and cheddar scallion.

Besides scones, Seegel also bakes up other pastries, cookies and cakes. She said her daughter’s brown butter chocolate chip cookies will make it in the bakery next week. She also wants to eventually add a citrus olive oil cake and berry muffins.

Customers can also purchase “take-and-bake” frozen scones or customizable scone mixes.
