The Heim family is opening a pizza tavern on South Main soon

Emma and Travis Heim are trading in their bacon burnt ends for late-night pizza and craft cocktails.

Say hello to One Trick Pony Pizza Tavern.

The Hot Box Biscuit Club brunch restaurant closed in late 2024, which opened up the space at 313 S. Main Street. The 100-year-old building was the rustic vibe the Heims were looking for, with steel pipes and exposed brick.

The restaurant will serve cracker-crust, Chicago-tavern style pizzas, homemade pastas, and even a burger. The cocktail options were curated by local mixologist Tia Downey, who is the head bartender at the bar in the Bowie House Hotel.

The Heims retired from the pit in 2024. They founded the first Heim BBQ trailer in 2015 with the Churchill family, then helped launch the brand’s first brick-and-mortar location on Magnolia in 2016.

“I loved barbecue — I’m proud of my accomplishments,” Travis told the Star-Telegram in a previous interview. But the couple wanted to open their own fun experiment.

Their pizza tavern will officially open its South Main doors next week.

One Trick Pony Pizza Tavern menu

A news release revealed a sneak peek into the menu, which includes homemade wagyu meatballs, mozzarella sticks and a chopped Italian salad with sourdough croutons and homemade dressing.

The only pizza hinted at was “The Big Hurt” spicy Italian sausage and giardiniera (pickled veggie relish of sorts).

For those who aren’t in the mood for Italian, One Trick Pony will also serve a double-patty burger.

Dessert includes custom ice cream sundaes, which will be served in a One Trick Pony mini-baseball hat, as if you were visiting Globe Life Field. And a rotating flavor of cookie skillets will switch up weekly.

The cocktail menu previewed the Pepperoncini Tini, a sour twist on the classic martini.

A new South Main restaurant

The opening of One Trick Pony joins a slew of what we’ve called a “South Main business boom.”

Several food and drink businesses have successfully opened in the last year — Japanese yakitori grill Ichiro Izakaya, Roman-style pizzeria Felina, Blue Flag Whiskey Distillery and a recent revamp at Tinie’s.

One Trick Pony will only add to the list with their official opening date set for Wednesday, June 10. Reservations can be made online ahead of time.

Hours will be Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m.
