New York-style bagels and sandwiches are coming to this North Texas suburb

An Ohio-based chain known for freshly baking bagels all day long will open its first Texas location in Aledo soon.

Barry Bagels signed a 30-unit franchising deal to expand operations to Texas, starting in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“I worked at the original location with Barry Greenblatt, the original owner,” Barry Bagel’s Texas franchise partner Michael Wainz told the Star-Telegram. “I can’t take people from Texas up to the Ohio-Michigan border. I need to bring it to them, and so choosing to open up the store where my wife and I live is why we’re starting there [in the DFW area].”

Barry CEO of franchising James Nusbaum announced in a LinkedIn post on May 27 that the first North Texas store will open in Aledo.

Bagels are all the rage recently. The viral sourdough Dan’s Bagels opened in Trophy Club in 2021 and quickly expanded to stores in Fort Worth and Grapevine at the end of last year, and another location in Argyle in April.

The beloved Shug’s Bagels from Dallas is plotting a Fort Worth store on Camp Bowie in the Arlington Heights neighborhood. They are known for their bagel sandwiches with breakfast options or deli meat and chicken cutlet options.

Birdy’s Bagels also recently sparked popularity on Instagram. This pop-up offers a rotation of seasonal flavors and the classic lox or BEC (bacon, egg and cheese) dress-ups. Their popularity may be based on their exclusivity — they are only open on Saturdays and Sundays until noon at the Holly Wine Bar in South Main.

And Barry Bagels will expand into North Texas’ bagel boom, too.

When will the first Texas location for Barry Bagels open?

The new Barry Bagels location will be at 10303 E. Bankhead Highway in Aledo.

The new shop is across the street from Aledo High School and Coder Elementary School. Wainz said they are hoping to open the Barry Bagels in Aledo by the start of the 2026-27 school year.

Aledo doesn’t have many dedicated bagel shops. But there are a few donut and coffee shops that may also offer bagels.

“It’s a fast-growing area with a high population number and incredible growth, but not a lot of food options,” Wainz said.

What is on the Barry Bagels menu?

Since 1972, Barry Bagels has been known for bagels made fresh throughout the whole day, and not just in the morning. The New-York inspired bagels are boiled, then baked for a crispy outside with a soft and pillowy inside.

Similar to the New-York based Pop-Up Bagel that just opened its first Texas store in Dallas, when you order a bagel, it’s so fresh, it burns your hand when you get it.

Barry sells breakfast bagel sandwiches and deli bagel sandwiches like hot corned beef, pastrami or BLTs. They also have egg, chicken and tuna salad sandwiches.

“We don’t really have the ‘you get the number one or the number two,’” Nusbaum told the Star-Telegram in a phone interview. “We’re gonna walk you through your bagel or bread choice, and then your meats and your cheeses and vegetables and that sort of stuff. We want the customer to get exactly what he or she wants.”

Nusbaum also said the new Barry Bagels in Aledo will have some Texas flavor specials.
