Live rat found at Plano restaurant; 2 establishments closed after health inspections
Two Plano food establishments were closed during the Aug. 3-16 health inspections after a live rat and roaches were found at one restaurant and insufficient hot water at the other, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.
Everest Indian Himalayan Restaurant and Bar at 2300 McDermott Road scored 86 during an Aug. 14 follow-up inspection. The inspector had found flies and roaches in the building and evidence that rodents had been eating from a sack of sugar. Rodent droppings were observed throughout the facility, and a live rat was seen in the dining room and bar area.
The restaurant was temporarily closed until the rodent and roach infestation could be dealt with.
Food Paradise Meat and Grocery at 3825 W. Spring Creek Parkway scored 85 on Aug. 13. The inspector found five or six live roaches in front of the walk-in freezer in the meat market. The meat saws and grinder weren’t being cleaned properly, and there was insufficient hot water at the hand sink.
The meat market portion of the establishment was temporarily closed until the issue with the hot water could be fixed.
The city of Plano scores restaurants on a 100-point system. A score of 100 is considered a perfect score, and 70 is extremely poor. Four locations scored below 80.
Desi Bites at 5588 State Highway 121 scored 71 on Aug. 12. An employee was seen touching ready-to-eat food with his bare hands. Chicken, potatoes and rice weren’t held at a safe temperature and a hand-washing sink was being used for food preparation.
Cambria Suites at 7500 Parkwood Blvd. scored 76 on Aug. 3. A can opener and the interior of the ice machine were dirty, an open bag of rice was being stored on the floor and several hand sinks were without soap.
Mexican Sugar at 7501 Lone Star Drive scored 77 on Aug. 11. Some cooked beans hadn’t been cooled properly, drink toppings at the bar were uncovered and a food prep cooler wasn’t working.
Dry Rub at 7800 Windrose Ave. scored 79 on Aug. 14. A food prep table was dirty, some brisket was held at an unsafe temperature and employees weren’t following proper hand-washing procedures.
Three establishments were operating with a recently expired permit — Corner Wines at 4017 Preston Road, Tacodeli at 2401 Preston Road and Adventure Kids Playcare at 4817 W. Park Blvd. All three locations were instructed to obtain a valid permit or face closure.
