Retirement home cited; roaches, flies found at restaurant in Fort Worth inspections

A Fort Worth retirement home was cited during food service health inspections for repeated violations of not having enough hand washing supplies at a sink, according to data from the city compiled by the Star-Telegram.

Grandview Chisholm Trail retirement home received the citation during its April 4 inspection, according to a report from inspectors, and two Fort Worth restaurants received scores higher than 30 demerits in the inspections, conducted between April 2 and April 9.

In Fort Worth, a perfect score for a restaurant or other food service inspection is a zero. The higher the score, the worse the business did. Restaurants receiving a score of more than 30 are required to fix the most serious health code violations immediately and have the rest cleaned up within 48 hours.

El Merendero Restaurant at 3000 South Freeway received a score of 36 on April 8, and Joe’s Italian Pizza Pasta Subs at 1601 Park Place Drive was given a score of 33 on April 4.

Inspectors noted at El Merendero violations including insects or pests in the restaurant, improperly stored food, inadequate hand washing supplies at sinks, and unclean and damaged floors and walls.

At Joe’s Italian, inspectors said they found an unclean soda fountain, damaged walls and ceilings, outer entries not sealed against rodents or inspects entering the building, and food contact surfaces that were not properly sanitized.

Inspectors also found roaches and flies at Los Tacos H’s at 3025 Cleburne Road during an inspection on April 5. That restaurant received a score of 21.

Two businesses received perfect scores in this round of inspections. Costa Vida at 9530 Feather Grass Lane, in its April 6 inspection, and Comedor el Zabrosito at 1712 N. Sylvania Road, on April 5, both received perfect scores.

Here are the inspection scores and violations for restaurants within the city limits of Fort Worth for April 2nd - April 9th, 2022. Scores are based on a demerit system. When the total exceeds 30, the restaurant must take immediate corrective action on all identified critical violations, then has 48 hours to initiate corrective action on all other violations.
