Here’s which Fort Worth restaurants have roaches, mice and the most health violations

Health inspections in Fort Worth from January and the first week of February showed two restaurants received critical violations.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram compiled the city’s health inspection violations into a searchable database. Users can search by restaurant name or by keywords included in violations.

In total, 453 health inspections took place in Fort Worth during this time period.

Fred’s Texas Cafe on Currie Street received the most violations in January.

On Jan. 14, the popular hamburger eatery received 34 violations, including “organic matter inside of ice machine,” non-food surfaces having an accumulation of “dust, dirt, food residue and other debris,” and food not being kept at a proper temperature.

In a follow-up inspection on Feb. 6, Fred’s received nine violations.

On Jan. 15, Meso Maya on South Hulen Street received the second most violations at 31.

Violations included cooked pork kept at an inadequate temperature in the walk-in cooler; a dirty thermometer was sitting on top of cilantro; and tomatoes, guacamole and cheese were warmer than a safe temperature.

On Feb. 5, the Mexican restaurant received four violations in a follow-up inspection.

Brewed, Paisanita Deli and Piranha Killer Sushi tied for the third most violations at 29.

Riscky’s BBQ on Azle Avenue received 25 violations, including one because a live cockroach was on the food-prep table inside the kitchen.

Roaches were also spotted in Jersey Mike’s Subs on South Hulen and at the Snooty Pig Cafe on Westport Parkway.

According to the city of Fort Worth health inspection website, “the scores here represent only a snapshot of the facility at the time the inspector arrived. The conditions could be better or worse while an inspector is not present.”

With the demerit system used by the city, there is no failing score, according to the website. “However, state law does indicate that when total demerits exceed 30, ‘the establishment shall initiate immediate corrective action on all identified critical violations and shall initiate corrective action on all other violations within 48 hours,’ ” the website says.

Here are the inspection scores and violations for restaurants within the city limits of Fort Worth for January 2020. Scores are based on a demerit system. When the total exceeds 30, the restaurant must take immediate corrective action on all identified critical violations, then has 48 hours to initiate corrective action on all other violations. To search this month's restaurant inspections, type in a keyword or restaurant name. You can also sort by score.
