CoverGirl’s Total Tease Mascara lives up to its name in an unintended way

Have you ever found yourself wondering what it would be like to tease your eyelashes? Yes, I said that correctly. Tease your eyelashes.

If so, CoverGirl’s newest mascara launch might just be the product for you. Available at Target, CoverGirl Total Tease Mascara ($7.99) is designed to darken and thicken eyelashes for maximum eyelash definition. The budget-friendly mascara, which comes with an innovative teasing wand, allows users to tease even the tiniest eyelashes in hard-to-reach corners for a full, defined look that lasts all day.

First impression

Much like the CoverGirl So Lashy! blastPro Mascara that I reviewed earlier this year (and rated as a Flub), the Total Tease Mascara has a unique wand that is different from anything I’ve tried before. On one side of the dual-ended wand is a full set of short, dense bristles designed to lengthen and thicken. On the other side is a small precision tip used for teasing and separating.

The mascara, which is available in a waterproof version, is formulated to be smudge-proof and has a thin, wet consistency. Applying the mascara is slightly messy, mostly because the product’s formula clings heavily to the wand. This means you must use a very light hand when applying the mascara or else risk getting product directly in your eye.

The CoverGirl website suggests applying multiple coats for maximum volume, but I could not apply more than two coats without the mascara leaving my eyelashes looking extremely clumpy.

Fab or flub?

Flub. While not as poorly designed as the CoverGirl SoLashy! blastPro Mascara, the Total Tease Mascara still falls short. The mascara’s wand, which does a decent job of lengthening eyelashes, is messy and packs on way too much product. After one swipe, my eyelashes looked more clumpy than voluminous and were not as defined as I like them to be.

The most disappointing part of the mascara was the small precision tip. Despite the claim that it has the ability to tease out the length of eyelashes and remove clumps, I found the precision tip to be useless. For those who are in the market for a good drugstore mascara, I suggest opting for the L’Oréal Voluminous Original Mascara instead.
