Flyfest returns to Trinity River with fishing and lots of other free fun for all ages
You don’t have to be an experienced angler to join the fun during the Tarrant Regional Water District’s 7th annual Flyfest on Saturday, March 12 along the Trinity River in Fort Worth.
Everyone of all ages is welcome, even if you’ve never touched a fly rod.
The TRWD Flyfest coincides with the district’s trout stocking season. The TRWD will release 1,800 pounds of rainbow trout in addition to the nearly 3,000 Texas native fish stocked annually.
The Flyfest offers plenty of free activities, including presentations such as fly fishing 101, a beginner’s guide to fly fishing the Trinity River and fly fishing the Texas coast.
Also, casting demonstrations will be held, along with beginner casting classes and an accuracy casting contest.
No equipment or experience is required for the beginner casting classes. Officials ask that participants bring a rod if they have one, but a limited number of loaner rods will be available on site. Beginner classes are offered for children ages 8 and older, but those between 8 and 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Those with a competitive streak can enter the big trout contest. Prizes will be offered for the biggest trout caught and the most fish caught in the time allotted. A fishing license is required, and participants must register as a team.
And if you’re not into fishing, don’t worry. Plenty of other entertainment will be available, including food trucks, craft beer and wine, face painting, rock climbing and live music provided by local band Chattahoochee Music.
Flyfest takes place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. along the Clear Fork of the Trinity River near the intersection of Bryant Irvin Road and River Park Drive. Admission is free, with $5 parking available at River Park Trailhead, 3100 Bryant Irvin Road.
