‘The Chosen’ celebrates season 5 premiere in North Texas — here’s when you can watch in theaters

Several cast and crew members of “The Chosen” gathered on a cool and windy day in North Texas to celebrate the premiere of season 5.

The drama series, based on the life of Jesus, is gearing up to release its new season, which covers Holy Week and the Last Supper. The eight-episode season will release in theaters in three parts. The first part (episodes one and two) releases March 28.

Here’s the synopsis for season 5:

The table is set. The people of Israel welcome Jesus as king while his disciples anticipate his crowning. But — instead of confronting Rome — he turns the tables on the Jewish religious festival. Their power threatened, the country’s religious and political leaders will go to any length to ensure this Passover meal is Jesus’ last.”

Dozens of fans, multiple nuns, a few priests and even former Dallas Cowboy Daryl “Moose” Johnston, all attended the world premiere on March 20 at B&B Theatres Red Oak 12 in Red Oak.

For “The Chosen” creator Dallas Jenkins, the experience was special, not only because the series films about 20 miles southwest in Midlothian, but since he’s based in Dallas.

“It’s so great to have a premiere at home,” Jenkins told the Star-Telegram. “It’s where I live, it’s where the show lives, it’s where we shoot the bulk of it, it’s where a lot of our most passionate fans are.”

Jesus actor on being back in North Texas

Jonathan Roumie, who plays Jesus in the show, was among those walking the black (not red) carpet at the premiere.

He said it was “lovely” to be back in North Texas to celebrate the show and that it’s a different experience than being here for production.

“Right now this is fun and carefree and just a night to celebrate the release of season five,” Roumie said.

This season is “huge” and Roumie said he’s most excited for fans to see how they filmed the Last Supper scenes.

“I think it’s going to be a real profound experience for them,” Roumie said.

‘The Chosen’ creator on filming in North Texas

“The Chosen” has filmed at Camp Hoblitzelle in Midlothian since season 3.

The 1,200-acre campus is owned and operated by The Salvation Army, and serves as a “peaceful setting” for retreats and conferences, according to the facility’s website. Numerous houses, meeting spaces and conference areas are located on the grounds at 8060 Singleton Road.

More than 80,000 square feet of soundstages and outdoor sets for “The Chosen” are located at Camp Hoblitzelle, including the 55 sets and locations built for season 5.

Around 200 crew members worked for six months to construct the backlot city set, according to the production. Of those crew members, several inscribed their favorite scriptures on the raw wall and floor before stone or stucco was applied.

Jenkins said it’s been “extraordinary” to have Camp Hoblitzelle as a resource over the years and not have to start from scratch every season.

“We formed a partnership years ago, so that they benefit us and we benefit them,” Jenkins said. “We all want the same thing, we want the stories of Jesus told to the world.”
