Despite being hosted in Austin, only one Texan took home a trophy at the County Music Television Awards on Sunday night.

Sebastopol-born Cody Johnson won CMT Performance of the Year for his performance of “’Til You Can’t” at last year’s CMT Awards show. Johnson was also nominated in Male Video of the Year for “Human.”

The CMT Awards are a fan-voted show with country music buffs casting their votes on music videos and live performances. This year’s awards were hosted by Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown at Austin’s Moody Center.

As Johnson stepped up to accept his belt buckle trophy, he told fans, “I will say this tonight, It’s great to be in my home state of Texas. Before I thank Warner Music Nashville, before I thank my band, my crew, cause this is Performance of the Year, my band and my crew and The Rockin’ CJB from Texas have worked their tail off of this. What I personally would like, before I do the same old speech that most people do, is what I would like is for everybody in here all at once, are you having fun at the CMT Awards? Make some noise.”

Yes, the Moody Center erupted in applause.

Other Texans nominated for awards included:

  • Maren Morris, Arlington - Female Video of the Year
  • Miranda Lambert, Longview/Lindale - Female Video of the Year
  • Drake Milligan, Mansfield - Breakthrough Male Video of the Year
  • Midland, Dripping Springs - Collaborative Video of the Year
  • Mickey Guyton, Arlington - CMT Performance of the Year
  • Charley Crockett, San Benito - CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year

Cody Johnson last performed in Fort Worth in October 2022 at Panther Island Pavilion. The “On My Way to You” singer is a frequent visitor of the pavilion, making stops in 2018, 2019 and 2021.
