Modern Indigenous culture featured in special photography exhibit at Amon Carter
Explore the transition to modern Indigenous culture when the Amon Carter Museum of American Art presents “Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography.”
The special exhibition, which opens Sunday, Oct. 30 and continues through Jan. 22, highlights the dynamic ways Indigenous artists have captured changes in their society over the past 30 years. Through their lenses, these Indigenous artists affirm their existence, unique perspectives and trauma.
The exhibit, featuring works by more than 30 artists, is one of the first at a major museum to document the transition to modern life for Indigenous people.
It includes approximately 70 photographs, videos, three-dimensional and digital works that delve into identity, resistance and belonging.
Featured artists include Nicholas Galanin, Kali Spitzer, Wendy Red Star, Zig Jackson, Cara Romero and a new commission by Sarah Sense.
Admission to the Amon Carter is free for all exhibitions. The museum is open from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. It is closed on Mondays.
