Now is the time to get out, soak up some rays and enjoy the beautiful spring weather before the blast furnace kicks in this summer.

Looking for things to do? How about spring festivals? This is the height of festival season in North Texas, with plenty of options close to home and beyond with day trips to consider.

Here are just a few to check out next weekend:

Spring Japanese Festival

The Fort Worth Botanic Garden/Botanical Research Institute of Texas (FWBG|BRIT) celebrates the Year of the Tiger with cultural demonstrations, shopping and traditional foods.

Highlights will include performances by two Taiko drumming groups and traditional Japanese martial arts experts.

Bonsai trees will be on display, along with demonstrations in Origami and Calligraphy.

Vendors will be selling unique treasures such as origami jewelry to crafts made with vintage kimonos. And you can dig in to some authentic Japanese cuisine prepared by the Fort Worth Japanese Society.

Visitors to this year’s spring festival are in for bonus treats with access to two ongoing exhibits.

“Stickwork,” a sculpture by artist Patrick Dougherty, remains on the grounds. Dougherty has weaved twines, twigs and saplings into shelters, towers, mazes, cocoons and other structures.

And you can marvel at larger-than-life insect sculptures as part of the “Big Bugs” exhibit, which is open through June 12. The sculptures are created from whole trees, cut green saplings, dry branches and other forest materials.
