Prescott shines again for Cowboys as Romo takes another day off
Quarterback Tony Romo took a rest day after an off day on Monday. The Cowboys were working short yardage and goal line so there was not going to be a lot of throwing in practice. It still remains curious that Romo took a day off after an off day for the second straight week. But the Cowboys believe those two consecutive days off are important.
Rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott worked with the first-team offense and had arguably his most impressive day of training camp. Prescott was particularly effective during the two-minute drill. He completed 5 of 5 passes and led the offense to a field goal. Prescott completed the first two passes to Cole Beasley, then hit Terrance Williams and Dez Bryant before a toss outside to tight end Jason Witten to stop the clock, setting up the field goal with 9.4 seconds left.
The Cowboys will continue to search for a veteran backup quarterback. Any move likely would come after final cuts via the waiver wire or a trade. They have no interest in giving up a fourth- or fifth-round pick for a quarterback on a one-year hire, and most likely would part with a sixth- or seventh-round pick. Stay tuned.
Middle linebacker Rolando McClain continues to miss training camp and is conceivably racking up fines. Per the collective bargaining agreement, he is subject to daily fines of $40,000. He will miss another $73,529 in the form of a game check if he does not report for Saturday’s preseason opener. McClain is already scheduled to miss the first 10 games of the season because of an NFL suspension. It’s probably a moot point because McClain is unlikely to play at all in 2016.
Safety Byron Jones needs to have a big season if the Cowboys’ defense is going to improve significantly from a year ago. Jones, a 2015 first-round pick, is supposedly the most athletic guy on defense in terms of speed and jumping ability. The Cowboys think he can be a ball-hawking center fielder in the middle of the defense, similar to former Baltimore Ravens great Ed Reed. Jones has been solid in camp but he has not flashed any special play-making ability. That was never more evident in a drill on Tuesday when Witten embarrassed him with a double move to haul in a wide-open throw from rookie quarterback Dak Prescott.
