Spieth excited for pro-am pairing with actor Bill Murray at Colonial
Jordan Spieth, the No. 2 player in the world golf rankings, said being grouped with actor Bill Murray in today’s pro-am at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational marks “one of the best pro-am groups I’ve had” as a PGA Tour competitor.
He also said a light-hearted trip around Colonial Country Club, scheduled to start at noon at the first hole, could be just what the doctor ordered for his psyche after Sunday’s closing 74 that took the Dallas resident out of contention at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
“I think so,” Spieth said. “I’ve played a few holes with him a couple of different times. I consider him a friend. Every time we see each other, we come up and have a talk. It’ll be a lot of fun. I was really excited to hear about the pairing. It’ll keep things really light today. I’ve seen this course plenty of times. It’s not like I’m out there really trying to grind. It’s more to get into a rhythm and feel like I’m putting some good swings on it and getting adjusted to the golf course. If I can have a really good time doing so on a Wednesday, it will be a lot of fun … This one’s certainly different having Bill. I’ll try and hold back on the Caddyshack references today.”
Among Murray’s many comedic roles, golf fans remember him best for being grounds-keeper Carl Spackler in Caddyshack. Spieth acknowledged the movie contains one of his favorite scenes but expressed no preference for a favorite Murray movie.
“It’s easy to go to Caddyshack when he’s smacking the plants and pretending he’s at the Masters,” Spieth said about a favorite Murray moment. “But I don’t know what my favorite Bill Murray movie is. I like all of them.”
