Mart’s big second quarter leads to 2A Division I title
Shatydrick Bailey scored three touchdowns in the second quarter for Mart as the Panthers scored 28 unanswered points to top Refugio 34-21 in the Class 2A Division I state championship on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium.
Refugio (13-2) appeared on its way to its second straight championship after the Bobcats scored two touchdowns in the first four minutes of the game on Jake Kelley’s 66- and 42-yard passes for a 14-0 lead.
Mart (15-1) came in with the 2A top-ranked offense and the second-ranked defense and displayed both strengths to dethrone Refugio. Bailey, the game’s Offensive MVP, scored on a 44-yard run and caught a 2-yard touchdown pass on a fake field goal to tie the game at 14.
Bailey scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 1-yard run with 16 seconds left in the first half for a 21-14 lead and the Panthers never trailed again.
After a scoreless third quarter, Mart scored on a 29-yard pass from Jace Terry to Jalon Kirven, who had seven receptions for 199 yards. Terry added a 64-yard touchdown run late in the fourth to give Mart its sixth state title in school history.
