Arlington Martin drops Arlington for seventh win
Arlington Martin claimed at least a share of the District 4-6A title with a 40-13 win over Arlington High at UTA’s Maverick Stadium on Friday.
The Colts’ loss, coupled with victories for Sam Houston and Bowie, eliminated Arlington from playoff contention. It ends a streak of six consecutive postseasons for the school.
Martin (7-2, 6-0), which will go Division I in the playoffs against a still undetermined opponent from District 3-6A, trailed late in the first quarter but scored 37 unanswered points to pull away. The Warriors have won seven straight games after starting the season 0-2.
The Warriors marched their opening drive 54 yards in 13 plays, but were forced to settle for a 38-yard Trey Tuttle field goal.
Arlington (3-6, 2-4) took the lead late in the first quarter following a Martin special teams miscue. The Colts recovered a muffed punt at the Warriors’ 44. Four plays later, 3-yard run from Hunter Collins made it 7-3.
The lead was short-lived as the Warriors’ special teams atoned for their mistake with a Jared Phipps 99-yard kickoff return to put Martin back on top, 10-3.
The second quarter was all Warriors. First Kristian Levy hooked up with Jess Trussell on a 20-yard reverse pass. Josh Watson’s run on the 2-point conversion made it 18-3.
On their next possession, Nic Smith’s 1-yard touchdown run capped 56-yard drive that extended the lead to 25-3.
Tyler Wilson was next in the end zone, taking a 15-yard keeper around the left end. Watson again added the 2-point conversion for the 33-7 lead at the half.
