Skoug hits slam
TCU catcher Evan Skoug hit a grand slam in the sixth inning during Team USA’s 5-4 loss to Japan in Shizuoka, Japan, on Sunday.
Skoug’s blast tied the game 4-4. Japan won with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th.
It was the fourth game of the 40th USA-Japan International Collegiate Series to be decided by a single run, with Team USA falling in three of those.
After the game, Skoug was presented with the “Fighting Spirit” award for his style of play and hustle.
“My thought process was to just put a good swing on it and drive in a few runs,” Skoug said. “Luckily enough I squared it up just right and it happened to go over the fence.”
Newsome exits
Ryan Newsome, a receiver who starred at Aledo High School, said on Twitter that he will transfer from Texas after one season.
Newsome, who originally committed to UCLA, caught four passes for 23 yards and returned six kickoffs for 110 yards as a freshman last season.
Alabama arrest
Alabama offensive lineman Alphonse Taylor was arrested on a drunken driving charge, according to the Tuscaloosa (Ala.) County Sheriff’s Office.
The 6-foot-5, 345-pound Taylor started all 15 games for the Crimson Tide during the 2015 national championship season. The guard is a preseason second-team All-Southeastern Conference pick by reporters covering the league.
Taylor is the third Alabama player arrested this off-season.
Left tackle Cam Robinson and defensive back Hootie Jones were arrested in mid-May on drug and weapons charges in their hometown of Monroe, La., but the district attorney declined to prosecute, citing insufficient evidence.
