Cameron Norrie of TCU fell to top-ranked Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday in the semifinals of the NCAA Division I men’s tennis championship in Tulsa.

Norrie was the first singles player in school history to reach the final round.

“What a great tournament and a great season for Cameron,” TCU coach David Roditi said. “Only one player gets to leave the tournament feeling amazing, but Cameron did make history for TCU men’s tennis here and he should be very proud of his accomplishments.”

Norrie is the sixth player in program history to be named an ITA singles All-American twice and the first TCU player to make back-to-back appearances in the Elite

Eight.

Frogs miss cut

The TCU men’s golf team made up more ground than anyone in the third round of the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore., but missed the 15-team cut after tying for 14th place and losing a tiebreaker by one shot.

The Frogs shot a 6-over 286, advancing nine spots into a five-way tie for 14th place, but only two of the teams could advance to the final round.

The tiebreaker was determined by the cumulative total of non-counting scores from each day. Louisville won the tiebreaker with a 230 non-counter score. Oklahoma then earned the final spot with a 234 non-counter score, one shot better than TCU’s 235 score.

“I’m incredibly proud of this team,” coach Bill Montigel said. “They hung in there and played very tough. It came down to the very end, but I couldn’t be more proud of this team.”

Paul Barjon and Chelso Barrett of TCU advanced in medalist play. Barjon shot a 1-under 69 on Sunday and Barrett a 2-over 72. Barjon is at 2-under 208 and in a tie for fourth place, four shots off the lead.

Barrett is 3-over par and tied for 20th place.

Baylor bailout

Two more football players backed out of their commitments to Baylor on Saturday, ESPN reported.

Hezekiah Jones, a receiver from Stafford, and safety Donovan Stiner of Houston Bellaire said on Twitter that they were no longer committed to the Bears.

Jones and Stiner told ESPN their decisions were because of the school’s announcement that coach Art Briles will be fired in response to a review of Baylor’s handling of sexual assault allegations involving several football players.
