TCU’s Hill shook off interception, which wasn’t all on him, Patterson says

TCU coach Gary Patterson said the coaches share blame for Kenny Hill’s interception on Saturday against Jackson State.

“A little bit of our fault,” Patterson said Monday during the Big 12 coaches conference call with reporters. “What we told him, by the way their safeties and corners played, we have to take a little bit of the blame. But outside of that, I thought all the quarterbacks did a good job.”

Hill completed 18 of 23 passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns. Backup Shawn Robinson was 5-for-7 for 94 yards and two touchdowns, adding 43 yards rushing. Grayson Muehlstein had 25 yards rushing.

“He kind of shook it off and went on; I thought he handled it fine,” Patterson said of Hill after the interception, which happened on the first play of the second half on a pass intended deep to the right side for KaVontae Turpin. Hill led another scoring drive in the third quarter, hitting Desmon White on a 37-yard touchdown pass before giving way to Robinson.

Patterson liked the play call from co-offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie but said Hill’s execution was a touch off.

“It was a read that he and Sonny both had what they wanted to throw and he probably left the ball in the air a little too long,” Patterson said. “I think you’ll get more of a feeling (for Hill) this week playing a better defense and going on the road. I have a lot of confidence in the things he can do.”

After the game, Hill said he was happy with the game “except for the pick,” which he called a pass that he left in the air too long.
