TCU women lose at Iowa State after arriving 3 hours before game
The TCU women relinquished an early double-digit lead and lost to Iowa State 72-69 on Saturday afternoon in a Big 12 women’s basketball game delayed by five hours after TCU’s travel delays.
The game started at 5 p.m, instead of noon after TCU was delayed flying out of Fort Worth on Friday because of a plane’s mechanical trouble. TCU arrived in Des Moines, Iowa, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived in Ames at 2 p.m., according to a TCU sports information release.
The Horned Frogs (10-11, 2-8 Big 12) trailed 70-69, after Jordan Moore’s basket with 50 seconds remaining. Iowa State missed a jump shot, but the offensive rebound was knocked out of bounds and Iowa State’s Seanna Johnson made two free throws for the final margin.
TCU missed two potential game-tying 3-pointers in the final two seconds.
“It’s really not that hard,” TCU coach Raegan Pebley said of the travel delay. “I’m not going to complain one second because our life is pretty cush. It is what it is. We’ve gone through some travel issues, but I am not going to complain. We have charter planes; we have hotels; our life is not hard.”
The Frogs led 22-8 after the first quarter thanks to five 3-pointers in the frame. Iowa State (12-9, 3-7), however, cut the TCU lead to three at halftime.
Toree Thompson led TCU with a career-high 17 points, hitting 4-of-6 on 3-point attempts. Jada Butts (14), Amy Okonkwo (12) and Moore (10) also were in double figures.
Bridget Carleton led Iowa State with 24 points, but was just 6-of-17 from the field. She hit 10-of-10 free throws to lead the Cyclones’ 27-of-29 effort from the foul line. TCU was 10 of 13 on free throws.
Johnson added nine points and 19 rebounds for Iowa State.
