President Jackson

Congratulations to Tobi Jackson on her election as president of the Fort Worth school board.

Her enthusiasm and dedication to the education of our children has made a real difference in performance in our schools in West Meadowbrook.

Meadowbrook Middle, Meadowbrook Elementary and Sagamore Hill Elementary have made great strides because of her interaction with the community and the educators in the schools.

Wolff in Arlington

This is to remind my neighbors that Lana Wolff is facing a challenger in the June 10 runoff.

The challenger is 22, inexperienced, lives in UT Arlington student housing and does know the district or current issues facing the city.

Lana has been an active advocate for our district and is well informed about citywide issues.

It is possible to contact her in person. She attends neighborhood group meetings and stays on top of current concerns.

We need her maturity and insight. Please be sure to use your voting rights to support her in this runoff.

Elin Jacks, Arlington

DWI checkpoints

It’s estimated that about 40 million people will be traveling this Memorial Day weekend to reach their vacation destinations or backyard barbecues.

And police will once again be relying on sobriety checkpoints to catch drunk drivers — congesting highways and aggravating travelers.

While we all want drunks off the road, checkpoints are ineffective and a poor use of traffic safety resources.

For example, a sobriety checkpoint in California earlier this month stopped over 1,500 drivers, but only made one DWI arrest. And another in Ohio caught zero.

These low success rates are unfortunately common.

The lack of results aren’t surprising. The locations and times of these DUI checkpoints are publicly available across media.

And since flashing lights and traffic jams that are associated with checkpoints can be seen from far away, it’s not difficult for a drunk drivers to avoid these locations.

Instead of using valuable traffic safety resources on ineffective enforcement methods, police should use roving or saturation patrols that have been proven to actively target dangerous drunk drivers without creating a legion of frustrated travelers.

That way, Memorial Day drivers can arrive to their destinations safely and headache-free.

Praise for M Bistro

Please don't let the negative review of M Bistro restaurant deter you from going there.

I have eaten there several times with friends and we all liked it. I know the space at Montgomery Plaza has had several restaurants but I can tell you that this one is a winner.

I've heard nothing but good things about their wonderful food. The desserts are the best.
