The Arlington school district is making the transition to college more musical.

AISD and the University of North Texas have partnered to create college-credit high school courses in fine arts, something sorely lacking in the “dual-credit” arena. The program starts in fall 2016 with a music history course, and more courses will be added over time, like music theory and piano.

It’s a district first.

The partnership helps emphasize the importance of fine arts courses for the developing student. It also will educate music-oriented high schoolers in college life.

“Music and the arts have been proven to enhance traditional studies, and this partnership … will provide unique opportunities for our students to earn college credit while gaining knowledge and skills from UNT professors,” AISD Superintendent Marcelo Cavazos said in a news release.

Adding this to the curriculum will help high schoolers get excited about a university education after graduation.
