Yes to online voter sign-up

Texas should join the 20 states that allow online voter registration.

Several bills aimed at that result were heard Monday by the House Elections Committee, but there were also plenty of objections.

The Texas Tribune reported that a handful of Harris County officials raised worries about compromising voter privacy and potential voting fraud.

Alan Vera, chairman of the Ballot Security Committee of the Harris County GOP, said online registration could make it easier for voters to be impersonated at the polls, the Tribune reported.

How is it easier to impersonate someone who registered online than it is to impersonate someone who filled out a paper form?

Moving any part of the voting process online obviously must be done very carefully.

But computers are ubiquitous today, and they make life easier. There must be ways they can make voter registration both easy and secure.
