Burleson bank finds card-reading skimming device, camera on ATM
Police are looking for suspects after a card-reading skimming device and a camera were found on an ATM at a bank in Burleson.
A bank employee noticed the devices on Aug. 11 before any cards were compromised, said police Capt. Melvin McGuire.
A green, circular skimmer was attached to the outside of the ATM’s card reader and a camera was positioned above the PIN pad.
Skimming devices, McGuire said, are designed to read a card number as the user slides it into an ATM. The skimmer found in Burleson also had a battery-powered memory device to store card numbers.
“They put a card reader over the top of the bank’s card reader,” McGuire said. “When you slide your card, you’re sliding it past their card reader.”
McGuire said the camera records people punching in their personal identification numbers.
Police would not release the name of the bank, but McGuire said they obtained photos of the suspects and alerted surrounding banks of possible similar scams.
