Police asked for help to identify and find a man detectives called a person of interest in the fatal stabbing of another man last month on an Irving street.

Authorities identified the victim as Osvaldo Mendoza, 22, of Dallas, who died on Jan. 25. Mendoza was stabbed after a traffic altercation, police said.

Police released a photo of a person of interest taken by a surveillance camera just before the stabbing. The man had been at the Race Trac, 1930 W. Northwest Highway, in Dallas.

The stabbing occurred just before 4 a.m. on Jan. 25 in the 2900 block of Proctor Street in Irving.

Investigators determined that Mendoza and his friends had left a gas station in Dallas after a night out. Minutes later, Mendoza and his friends got involved in a traffic altercation with a group of people in a sports utility vehicle in Dallas.

Both vehicles drove to Irving and stopped on Proctor Street.

A suspect got out of the SUV, approached Mendoza and stabbed him multiple times before he fled the scene.

Before the stabbing, detectives believe the person of interest in the case had been at the RaceTrac in Dallas. That person was in a navy blue or black SUV with chrome wheel rims.

Anyone with information should call Irving police at 972-273-1010 and reference case number 15-1766. Tips also can be sent to ipdcrimetips@cityofirving.org.
