Wal-Mart will close a Neighborhood Market in Fort Worth next month in a rare area closing for the giant discounter.

Employees were told Friday that the Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market at 6513 Meadowbrook Drive in east Fort Worth will close on May 29, according to Anne Hatfield, Wal-Mart’s director of communications. She said the company will work with the store’s 100 employees to try to transfer as many as possible to other Wal-Mart stores in the area.

The store’s hours have been reduced to 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., she said.

The decision on closing was made as part of an ongoing analysis to identify underperforming stores, she said.

The Meadowbrook Drive Neighborhood Market opened in 2003. The chain of smaller-format stores, which concentrates primarily on groceries, has been expanding. This week, Wal-Mart opened a Neighborhood Market in Hurst at 720 W. Pipeline Road.

Hatfield said Wal-Mart operates 135 stores in Dallas-Fort Worth, including 42 Neighborhood Markets and 93 Supercenters.
