Toadies, Flaming Lips to appear in X-Men comic
From starting their own festival to slapping their name on locally brewed beer, there isn’t much the Toadies haven’t done in the way of expanding their brand — until now.
Billboard reports the Fort Worth rockers, along with neighbors-to-the-north the Flaming Lips, will appear in the August issue of X-Men ‘92 (in that particular series, the storylines revolve around the 1990s iteration of X-Men).
The idea came, in part, from writer Chad Bowers, who says Toadies and the Lips are two of his favorite rock bands from that era: “The Flaming Lips and the Toadies are two of my favorite bands, and each had a profound impact on my musical tastes growing up — Rubberneck for the Toadies, and The Soft Bulletin and really everything behind it for the Lips,” Bowers told Billboard. “Getting to reference not just the bands, but the music and what those songs meant to us is pretty surreal, and unlike anything either of us imagined we'd be doing on X-Men ‘92.”
For their part, the bands are equally pleased, particularly Toadies’ drummer Mark Reznicek (himself an accomplished comic book creator).
“As a lifelong fan of comics in general, and X-Men in particular, I couldn’t be more excited that the Toadies are appearing as characters in X-Men ‘92,” Reznicek told Billboard.
Does this mean Wolverine and the gang will be planning a visit to Possum Kingdom?
