Fort Worth’s Blaine Mitchell advances on ‘The Voice’

A year after Mesquite native Craig Wayne Boyd won the seventh season of The Voice (and an unprecedented number of North Texas vocalists appeared on the program), another area singer is in the hunt for the top spot.

Monday night, Fort Worth singer Blaine Mitchell became the final artist to join coach Blake Shelton’s team, performing a rendition of Train’s Drops of Jupiter.

Mitchell is a member of Dallas alt-rock outfit Treeside (his bio on the band’s website actually lists his hometown as Rockwall, but as you can see in the clip below, he now says he’s from Fort Worth).

He got Shelton and fellow coach Gwen Stefani to turn their chairs, and while Stefani had plenty of praise for the singer (“It was incredible!”), Mitchell bonded with Shelton over their mutual love of the now-closed Cowboys Dancehall in Arlington — although Shelton apparently doesn’t know the venue has shuttered.

“Is it the most fun to play Cowboys?” Shelton asked Mitchell. “It’s one of the last places you can play where people can get onstage and are dancing.”

With the blind auditions portion of the season concluded, Mitchell, who is joined by fellow North Texan Madi Davis, who chose Pharrell Williams as her coach, will move on to the battle rounds, which will be broadcast beginning next Monday, Oct. 12.
