When I try to better understand the societal economic change that has swept the country over the past 12 years, I compare it to the 1890s by default. Like the current period in our history, that decade marked a high point for American innovation, technology and invention. Movies, the widespread use of electricity, phonographs and so on suggested that manufacturing was going to add a new dimension to our industrial base - that of building things for consumers.
