Football picks: Roll Tide to cover against Texas A&M
Lesson learned: Never take the under on a Big 12 game, unless the spread is 1,341.5 points.
Last week I stupidly took the under on TCU’s season opener against Iowa State. It was 44.5, which was not a problem.
Alas, I rallied for a big 3-2 weekend, enough to prevent me from reaching into my daughter’s college savings.
I am conducting an experiment: How would a veteran sports scribe do if he actually bet on football games? I don’t bet on games; this is not some ethical higher ground. I just hate losing money.
I start the season with a fake $50, and will place an imaginary $10 on five games, college or pro.
Last week’s results: 3-2
To date: 7-7-1
Year to date total winnings: $0
THIS WEEK’S PICKS
No. 13 Texas A&M at No. 2 Alabama (-17.5). ROLL TIDE
Only reason this is dicey is that Saban is willing to call off the hounds, which allows the other team to score trash points.
Southern Miss at North Texas (-1.5). MEAN GREEN
Neither team is great, but UNT is home and USM is b-a-d.
Oklahoma State (-22.5) at Kansas. JAYHAWKS
Just reeks of a backdoor cover.
Indianapolis Colts (-2.5) at Chicago Bears. COLTS
Undefeated Bears are due for a dud.
SoCal Chargers at TB Bucs (-7). BUCS
Tommy is playing like he’s 39 again.
