Football Picks: Take a hard look at this on TCU and Iowa State

This is the reason not to bet.

The San Diego Chargers knocked out their own starting quarterback before hosting the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. Without Tyrod Taylor starting, the Chargers lost but covered the 8.5-point spread.

Trash. I win that game if Taylor plays.

As a refresher, I am conducting an experiment: How would a veteran sports scribe do if he actually bet on football games?

I don’t bet on games; this is not some ethical higher ground. I hate losing money.

I start the season with a fake $50, and will place an imaginary $10 on five games, college or pro.

Last week’s results: 2-3

To date: 4-5-1

Year to date total winnings: minus $10

This week’s picks:

$10 Tampa Bay Bucs at Denver Broncos (+6.5) BUCS

Will be a long year for the Broncos.

$10 Dallas Cowboys at Seattle Seahawks (-4.5) SEAHAWKS

Betting on Russell Wilson offense vs. Dallas Cowboys defense, which has issues everywhere.

$10 Florida State at Miami (-10) HURRICANES

Until proven otherwise, FSU is just that bad.

$10 Iowa State at TCU O/U 44.5: UNDER

Two points may win it. ISU was awful in its opener, and TCU’s offense should remain a concern until proven otherwise.

$10 Kansas State at Oklahoma (-27.5) SOONERS

Hard to see that KSU offense scoring much in Norman.
