Texas Golf Hall of Fame adding some of Fort Worth’s best
The best of Fort Worth golf is joining the Texas Golf Hall of Fame. Of the six 2020 inductees, four have direct ties to Cowtown.
On Friday, the Texas Golf Hall of Fame announced its 2020 class, which includes Verne Lundquist, Angela Stanford, Hank Kuehne, Mike Wright, and Dow Finsterwald Jr.
Stanford graduated from Boswell High School and had an All-American career at TCU. She accomplished nearly everything an LPGA Tour player could, including winning her first major at 40 in 2018.
Stanford is the first woman to receive induction into the Hall’s Tour Professional class in 10 years.
Wright achieved the impossible when the late Ben Hogan endorsed him. Wright was appointed the head golf pro at Shady Oaks Country Club when he was 23, and he served there for 36 years.
Wright will be joined in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame Professional/Teacher category by Finsterwald Jr. He has been the head golf pro at Colonial Country Club since 1987.
Veteran sportscaster Verne Lundquist, who for decades called PGA Tour events on CBS, is being honored in the Lifetime Achievement category. The former resident of Colleyville was once the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys.
Kuehne II enters the Hall in the Amateur category. Between Oklahoma State and SMU, he was a three-time collegiate All-American. He joins his sister, Kelli, in the Texas Golf Hall of Fame.
Kuehne’s lingering back problems forced him to retire from competition, however, he’s still active as an instructor.
Also recognized by the Hall in the 2020 class is San Antonio’s Oak Hills Country Club, one of the oldest in the United States.
At least for the time being, the induction ceremony for the class is scheduled for Oct. 6 at the Houston Country Club. They will all be enshrined on granite markers on the Texas Golf Walk of Fame at Brackenridge Park Golf Course in San Antonio.
