Why did the Texas Rangers hold a Twitter Q&A with Jon Daniels?
When the first question reads, “Why do we suck?” the Texas Rangers should have just shut it all down.
The idea itself is noble and magnanimous, but for a team that hasn’t won much of anything in a while offering up a general manager who has been in power since 2005 to Twitter isn’t the best idea.
People get hurt on Twitter.
Nonetheless, the Texas Rangers offered up a Twitter question-and-answer with GM/President Jon Daniels on Thursday, the day before the first spring training game of the season.
“Twitter is a cesspool but ... have always said I’d be available to answer fan and media questions,” Daniels said via text. “It’s why we’re able to do what we do. Don’t want to forget that.”
You don’t have to be crazy about JD as a GM, but you have to like and respect that attitude.
I don’t have a lot of sympathy for people in these jobs — but this might be the exception.
The questions were the highlights:
@Nano2169, “Why are y’all damn cheap”
@FredThePet Tweeted, “Hey JD, big fan! What is your advice to keeping your job despite severely underperforming. You seem to have some experience, cheers.”
@Rileysm43085820, “I have a question why did u release all the great ranger baseball players.”
@MLB_Rantz, “Are you going to answer 100% truths? Did the Texas Rangers ever cheat in any way outside of steroids? Have you ever given the “ok” to steal signs? I just want it to be asked so we as fans have your word that you dident.”
@billyflan, “Can you trade yourself?”
@AdrienneMMG, “Why did you run off Nolan Ryan?”
@JakeHeadley, “Why don’t you ever spend money?”
@theHUKE, “Can I ask when he’s leaving so the @rangers can have a decent chance at success!?”
@bradlmeyers, “Are we gonna be the first Texas baseball team to win a World Series?”
@DahlingerD, “When are you signing Ryan Broekhoff”
@chris17726216, “How many games under .500 will you be this year?”
@_CursedVillain, “Did you ever actually play the game of baseball or are you just an Ivy Leaguer with a degree that got you the job?”
Generating sympathy for MLB GM’s isn’t easy, but a Twitter Q&A for Texas Rangers GM Jon Daniels feels like an appropriate exception.
