Vaqueros thumped by FC Wichita in season finale

The Fort Worth Vaqueros entered Sunday’s NPSL season finale looking to play spoiler and build a little momentum going into the Trinity River Cup.

Instead, they had another rotten day against FC Wichita.

Iyassu Bekele dribbled through the Vaqueros’ defense in the ninth minute to open the scoring, and the rout was on in Wichita, Kan.

FC Wichita (11-3-0, 33 points) scored twice just before halftime and tallied the final goal in the 59th minute to make it 4-0. The Vaqueros (3-6-5, 14 points) lost to FC Wichita 5-0 on June 4.

“It was a disappointing performance for the final league game of the season,” Vaqueros coach Mark Snell said. “For some reason there was a total lack of energy and fight. Again we surrendered some soft goals ... we need to regroup quickly.”

The Vaqueros visits Dallas City FC on Friday in the first leg of the Trinity River Cup. The return match is July 24.
