Fort Worth Vaqueros build 2-goal lead, settle for draw

The Fort Worth Vaqueros FC jumped ahead but had to hold on late to secure a 3-3 draw Friday against Dallas City FC at Roffino Stadium.

Opening 2015 play in the South Central Conference of the National Premier Soccer League, the Vaqueros held a 3-1 lead midway through the second half.

Vaqueros forward and Fort Worth native Nestor Martinez scored in the 70th minute to give his club the two-goal lead. Corwin Carbonell scored in the 60th minute as the Vaqueros (0-0-1) claimed a point on the road.

“I thought we competed well,” Vaqueros coach Mark Snell said. “Their 3-6-1 gave us some problems, but we were able to get some goals and come out with the draw on the road. Overall I’m pleased.”

Fort Worth took a 1-0 lead after a 20-minute rain delay because of lightning spotted in the area a mere 3:42 into the match. About a minute after the delay, Vaqueros forward Jorge Deleon struck.

Deleon caught the Dallas City defense napping as he took possession atop the penalty area. Deleon took a few touches and then struck from inside the 18-yard box.

The game featured a back-and-forth nature throughout the first half as both sides enjoyed opportunities. Despite the fast-paced, direct action the score remained 1-0 in favor of Fort Worth at halftime.
