Granbury’s Dana Vollmer gets silver as U.S. can’t match Aussies’ finish
The United States women’s 4x100 freestyle relay team of Simone Manuel, Abbey Weitzeil, Granbury’s Dana Vollmer and Kathleen Ledecky couldn’t catch Australia, which set a world record to capture the gold medal at the Rio Olympics.
Australia’s Cate Campbell held off Ledecky in the final leg to win in 3:30.65. The U.S. finished in 3:31.89 with Canada in third.
Earlier in the day, Vollmer qualified for the final of the 100 butterfly, finishing second in her semifinal heat in 57.06 seconds, behind Japan’s Rikako Ikee (57.05). Vollmer had turned in a time of 56.56 in the prelims earlier.
American Chase Kalisz shaved three seconds off his personal-best time, but couldn’t catch Japan’s Kosuke Hagino in the final of the 400-meter individual medley. Hagino won in 4:06.05, just ahead of Kalisz in 4:06.75.
Katinka Hosszu of Hungary sets a world record in the women’s 400 individual medley to win the gold medal. Maya DiRado of the United States claimed the silver.
Meili Watch party
Nolan Catholic High School will hold a watch party for alumna Katie Meili at 7:30 tonight in the auditorium. Meili, swimming in her first Olympics, will compete in the breaststroke as she tries to reach Monday’s final. Free T-shirts for the first 100 fans and snacks will be provided. U.S. women win
Hope Solo came up big as the United States fought off France 1-0 in an Olympic group match in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. Carli Lloyd scored the lone goal for the Americans, and Solo became the first goalkeeper, male or female, to reach 200 international appearances.
In other matches, Janine Beckie scored twice and Christine Sinclair had her 10th Olympic goal as Canada defeated Zimbabwe 3-1, and Australia tied Germany 2-2.
U.S. routs China
Kevin Durant and the U.S. Olympic basketball team look just as dominant as the ones who won the last two gold medals. Durant scored 25 points, and the Americans routed China 119-62.
Earlier, new Mavs center Andrew Bogut scored 18 as Australia upset France 87-66. Tony Parker led France with 18 — 16 in the second quarter.
Briefly
Archery: South Koreans captured gold by placing 15 of its 18 arrows in the top scoring ring to knock off the Americans 6-0 in the men’s team final. The U.S. earned silver for a second straight Olympics.
Tennis: Venus Williams faded in her opening match as her record fifth Olympics dragged past 3 hours and she lost to Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5). The 36-year-old Williams has four gold medals and seven Grand Slam titles.
Field hockey: The United States claimed one of the biggest wins in its Olympic women’s field hockey history, defeating world No. 2 Argentina 2-1.
Boxing: Nico Hernandez of Wichita, Kan., won a unanimous decision in the light flyweight division over two-time Olympian Manuel Cappai of Italy. Lightweight Carlos Balderas became the first American to win his bout earlier in the day.
Cycling: Greg Van Avermaet of Belgium outsprinted Jakob Fuglsang and Rafal Majka on the long run to the finish at Copacabana Beach to win the men’s road race.
Controlled explosion: A small blast shook the area near the finish line of the men’s cycling road race with about 43.5 miles to go in the race. The event went on unaffected. An officer assigned to the event said it was a controlled explosion of an unattended bag.
Stray bullet: Brazilian military and police said the bullet that flew through the roof of a media tent at the Olympic Equestrian Center was simply “an unfortunate incident.” Authorities are investigating the incident.
Rio delays: Olympic organizers apologized to the spectators who endured delays accessing venues on the first full day of competition and said measures were being taken to prevent a repeat of the long lines to enter parts of the Olympic Park.
U.S. water polo: Women’s coach Adam Krikorian has left the team to be with his family after one of his two older brothers died. Blake Krikorian, 48, died Wednesday in the Bay Area. The coach is to return to the team Monday.
